On March 26, 1942, German (Type VIIC) U-boat, U-71, attacked American tanker SS Dixie Arrow in the Atlantic off the coast of North Carolina, about 12 miles off the Diamond Shoals Light Buoy. The tanker sank later in the day. Eleven dead and 22 survivors. USS Tarbell (DD-142) assisted in the recovery of survivors. The German submarine sank five Allied merchants including SS Dixie Arrow and the American merchant ship SS Oakmar only six days earlier. U-71 was scuttled on May 2, 1945.
