List of Military and Armored Fighting Vehicle Photographs in the World War II Collection of Seized Enemy Records Group RG-242-GAP in the National Archives

by Ray Price

with William Auerbach, Peter Frandsen and Ray Merriam

First published as Military Monograph 14 by the Merriam Press

Introduction to Original Edition (c. 1980s)

This photograph listing is intended for the use of researchers, authors, historians and military/armored fighting vehicle enthusiasts. It contains an extensive listing of many of the photographs with these subjects as found in the World War II Collection of Seized Enemy Records Group (RG) 242-GAP in the National Archives in Washington, D.C.

It is a shame that no one has previously attempted to, even partially, catalog the photographs available to the public in the National Archives.

There are 233,000 still photos in this one Records Group alone, so you can see that a complete catalog of such collections would be virtually impossible, but certainly small selective listings, like this, could be made and would be more than welcome by researchers. At any rate, the publication of this listing will help alleviate this lack of data at least for a small portion of the collection.

For those who want to visit the National Archives to view this material before making any purchases, the following may be helpful:

The numbering system works like this: The 242-GAP is the identifying number of the Records Group, and must precede the photo number so that the National Archives staff will know which group to begin searching in. The letter following the box number is the folder the photo is in, while the last number is the individual photo. For example, 242-GAP-1-B-13 would mean Records Group 242-GAP, Box 1, Folder B, and photo number 13.

Postscript

There are a few caveats to pass on to you, should you decide to purchase prints or negatives of any of the photographs listed in this work.

The quality of the images varies considerably. Some really aren’t all that good to begin with; some photographers used by the German armed forces were professional photographers in civilian life, no doubt, and it shows in some of the photographs here.

So pay close attention to the descriptions provided in this article about condition, etc.—the author, Ray Price, did examine each of the photographs in this particular records group and these are the best of the bunch. I should point out, too, that Ray Price was examining these from the viewpoint of an AFV modeler and historical buff, hence his inclusion of details about views of unusual or rare vehicles, and hard-to-find views of even the more common vehicles (such as rear or interior views that usually aren’t common and can drive modelers nuts trying to detail same).

I want to thank Peter Frandsen for his assistance in obtaining the bulk of the information that made up this material from Ray Price. And also William Auerbach for his additions to the list from his own trips to the National Archives, and notations and comments to the original list. I am to “blame” for the resulting work which you see here, which was compiled from a substantial pile of handwritten notes, often using non-standard abbreviations and many, many “ditto” marks. I hope I “translated” each of their contributions properly. I have attempted to make it more presentable and easily readable without sacrificing accuracy (I hope!).

Postscript to the 1999 Edition

You may already be aware that it is no longer possible to obtain copies of photographs direct from the National Archives. The Archives now requires that you use a researcher or firm specializing in such activity that is located in the Washington, D.C., area.

My personal feeling about this development is that this is a step backwards. While dealing with the Archives staff could be aggravating even under ideal conditions, you knew exactly who you were dealing with, especially if you dealt with them often, and you could be prepared for just about anything. And their prices were generally fair.

Unfortunately, dealing with commercial businesses and individual researchers can be even more aggravating and definitely much, much more costly. I have seen the price list of one such firm that charged as much as $20.00 for an 8 × 10 inch photographic print—and that did not include the hourly research fees they charged to go to the Archives and locate the item!

I believe an individual can still go to the Archives and do their own researching, but this, too, can be prohibitively expensive for many people.

Part of this change was due to the GAO (Government Accounting Office) trying to find ways to cut the cost of government, although I’m certain there were many other things (in the Archives as well as all other areas of the Federal government) that could have used some trimming more than this.

Another part of the reason, I’m sure, was the problem with theft of materials from the Archives. I know that this has always been a big problem (and I suspect it probably still is). The problem is that much of the theft was being done, not by the visitors, but by the Archives staff. For years documents of all kinds have been stolen from the Archives and have been sold to collectors.

Perhaps they should consider turning the entire Archives over to a single, reputable commercial concern that could better perform all the tasks required, efficiently, cost effectively and maybe even at a profit.
